The People are Sovereign in India, because it is us the People who have given to ourselves the Constitution. This is in contrast to the British system, where there is no written constitution and the Parliament is supreme.

In India, the Supreme Court of India on a petition by the citizens, can overturn any Act passed by the Parliament, if the same is unconstitutional. However, in the UK, the Act of the Parliament is supreme and cannot be overturned by any other authority.

The Indian system is based on the American example of a Republic, where the people gave to themselves the Constitution and authorized the various institutions of the State to exercise the power vested in the people. There was never a sovereign other than the people.

A contrast is the British system, where the sovereign power was vested in the Crown and the Parliament snatched the power from the Crown through the Cromwell wars. The monarchy also now exists at the pleasure of the Parliament, which is supreme and sovereign.
