    By stopping the Army of Northern Virginia, led by Robert E Lee, the Union was able to claim a decisive victory.

    Gettysburg was meant to show the country that the Southern Army was able to freely march into the North, much in the same way that Sherman's March Through the South was meant to terrorize the South.

    By stopping Lee and having Lee make a tactical retreat, the North won the battle.
