Why would the United States change from being isolated to being imperialist?

    Isolationism refers to America's long-standing reluctance to participate in European wars and alliances. Isolationists were not unwilling to think that the United States, especially in the Western Hemisphere, should be a global player and further his territorial, ideological and economic interests.
