The two famous civilizations, the Aztecs and the Mayas, lived where is now the country we know as Mexico. The Maya people lived in southern Mexico from as early as 2600 BC, while the Aztecs lived in central Mexico between the 14th and 16th centuries. In April of 1519, the Spanish, led by Hernán Cortés, landed in Mexico and began the conquest of the territory. Mexico has been a democratic republic since 1917.
