The sociology of deviation is the branch of sociology that is responsible for the study of consensus on social norms, acts and behaviors that deviate from them and the social control system built to avoid such deviations.

Deviation is a fundamental issue in sociology and since the birth of this discipline has been one of its main concerns. 1 In this sense, the main sociological trends have given their interpretation of the how and why of non-compliance with social norms.

Deviation has been analyzed from different disciplines such as anthropology, philosophy, law, biology or medicine: in addition, studies in criminology have been developed in recent years, a discipline with which the sociology of deviation is closely linked. Although the former focuses more on the relationship between the victim, the offender and the laws, the sociology of deviation also analyzes behaviors that, without being prescribed as crimes, are classified as abnormal and receive some kind of social sanction.

Deviance is any act which violates social norms. According to sociology theorists, deviant behaviors could be divided into informal or formal. For example, deviant behavior such as committing robbery is considered formal and criminal. On the other hand, examples of informal a non-criminal deviant acts could be in some cultures, to walk barefoot in an office or standing too close to a person.
