It happened on June 17th (1972) when burglars (connected to President Nixon) were caught stealing documents and wiretapping phones and the president took aggressive measures to prevent people from discovering the crime. The investigations revealed a series of abuses made by Nixon's administration that led to his resignation from office. The outcome of the scandal was important because it reinforced the idea that, in America, the government is based on the law and not on the rule of an individual.
