After the end of the French and Indian War In 1763, France, Britain, and Spain endorsed the Treaty of Paris. According to the section of the treaty, France had to give up nearly all of its land in North America and Spain had to give up Florida. As the result, British divided Florida into two provinces: West Florida and East Florida and the Apalachicola River as the border. St. Augustine continued to be the capital of East Florida, while Pensacola became the capital of West Florida.
