David Ricardo defines economics as the fundamental argument in favor of free trade among countries and of specialization among individuals. David Ricardo developed his economic theory as a reaction to the man's writings of Smith. Adam Smith published "The Wealth of Nations" in 1776. It described a system that we would think of as "capitalism".
