However, many Americans felt it was a good idea at the time considering that one of the major reasons behind the colonists breaking away from Great Britain was the idea of a strong central government having the ability to tax citizens without their consent.

    The state and national currencies competed with each other - Under the Articles of Confederation, there was no uniform currency. This made interstate and international trade extremely difficult. This resulted in a lack of revenue for the federal government.
