Yes Lincoln DID want to save the union and he did by A former Whig, Lincoln ran on a political platform opposed to the expansion of slavery in the territories ... Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation freed about millions of slaves in Confederate-held territory, and established emancipation as a Union war goal.
