The 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, granted what was known as unconditional pardon on January 21, 1977, to over thousands of men who evaded the draft during the war America fought with Vietnam.

These young Americans were said to have moved to different places in early 1970s so that they will not serve in the war. Most of them went to Canada while some others hid in the United States. Some men who deserted the military also went to Canada where they were left untouched unlike what was found in Canadian law for such deserters to be persecuted.
