Rory is 16 but has been charged with a crime. His lawyer was hoping he would be tried as a juvenile but, due to the seriousness of the crime, he will be tried as an adult. What is the legal mechanism that allows for this

    In U. S, juveniles may be transferred to adult criminal court through the process called a waiver hearing. The judge of a juvenile court may transfer a juvenile to be tried as adult after examining the seriousness of the crime. Crimes such as murder and r ape are more liable to receive a waiver hearing.

    In some cases, a juvenile may be automatically tried as an adult through "automatic transfer" process if meets the two criteria; if the juvenile is of a certain age (usually sixteen) and if the crime involves serious harm.
