Why were merchants able to make a profit on the silk road

    The further they went from their main land, the prices went up.

    Merchants were able to make money by traveling further down the Silk Road. The farther away from home they went, the more there prices drove up because they did not have those things further East/West, and it became more of a risk when they traveled.
