They are called salt marshes because the sand seemed to be marshy because the soil perhaps composed of peat and deep mud. Peat is waterlogged. It is root-filled and very spongy. Frequent submerging of salt marshes by tides which contains plenty of decomposing plant material, levels of oxygen in the peat could be very low.
