The House of Burgesses was important because it's the first place where the elected representatives of the English colonist first met to debate on common interests and problems in the colony of Virginia. It was established in 1619, later separating into two houses, the House of Burgesses and the Governor's Council, but was disbanded in 1766 being replaced by the Virginia House of Delegates. Since the House of Burgesses was a bicameral legislature it was a model for the first representative governmental model in America.
