    I believe the answer is: The residents are shareholders in a corporation that owns the building.

    In cooperative building, several individuals could chip in some percentage of payment that needed to build the house.

    In exchange, they made an agreement on how each contributors could use the house for their benefit.

    This system is very common to see in nordic countries.
