Seven Principles of the Constitution:

Republicanism - The voting by the people of political representatives to represent them in Congress.
Federalism - A system in which power is divided between the national and state governments. Federal or national level up top followed by state governments.
Separation of Powers - The dividing of powers over the government through branches aka the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The power is in the branches each with specific jobs and importance's.
Checks and Balances - A system allowing each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches in order to prevent abuse of power. So they issue a series of checks on each other to ensure balance among the branches.
Limited Government - Citizens and powerful government leaders alike, must obey the law. This also prevents too much power by saying everyone is equal having to all pay tax, etc ... At first, this did NOT include slaves.
Individual Rights - Basic liberties and rights of all citizens. They are protected and guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. These are unalienable rights.
