Syrian forces entered Lebanon in 1976 and fought until the bloody Civil War in 1990 which left 150,000 people dead. Syria's strong influence on Lebanon did not cease after 1990. They finally withdrew in 2005, but Syria remains a powerful force in Lebanon. Lebanon struggled and was left with a political vacuum after former President Emile Lahoud stepped down.
