George miller proposed a theory that states that approximately 7 (plus/minus 2) chunks of information can be held in short term memory at any one time. by "short-memory", he meant a range of items, like numbers, letters or words and by "chunks", he meant the store space in which information was assumed to be processed when first perceived.

    This is the chunking theory. He presented the impression that short-term memory may perhaps only hold 5-9 chunks of information (seven plus or minus two) wherever a chunk is any meaningful unit. The idea of chunking and the inadequate capacity of short term memory became a plain element of all succeeding theories of memory.
