What colonist were the first to settle in America

Apart from the Norse discovery of America (11 Century) the first to settle in America were Christopher Columbus and his crew in Hispaniola (the Island), in 1493. In the modern US territory the first to settle would be John Guy and his associated, although there were explorations before him (but not a permanent settlement).
