Define manifest destiny

In the 1840s people believed it was their god given right to expand across North America to the Pacific Ocean. (AKA to California)

After the intoxicating victory in the Mexican American War, the U. S. grew land-hungry and sought to expand. The idea is that America is the superior Nation and is henceforth endowed by "God" to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
