Alex even though he has his opinion about smoking and addiction will more likely conform if he feels insecure as the new member of the team. This insecurity would make him conform as not to stand out from his new team even though his opinion is valid.

Alex may succumb to follow the opinions of he's fellow team mates due to peer pressure. Alex is aware and correct with he's ideas on smoking but will find it hard if not strong willed, to stay the course. To be a part of the group, he will eventually have to morph into the group ideals. This can be seen as a reflection of our lives in our society and how we eventually succumb to the ideas of how we should live.
