Chester's working self-concept is variable when he finds himself around different people. When he is with his conservative family, I describe himself as liberal, but when he is with his friends from Connecticut, I describe himself as Southern.

The self-concept is the personal perception of who we are, which includes thoughts, opinions, preferences and even hobbies.

Our self-concept is variable in different situations because we adjust it to the people with whom we interact or to the environment in which we find ourselves so that it is closer to our feeling. For example, in front of a conservative family Chester may feel more liberal, but in front of more liberal friends he may feel more traditional.
