    Old saint Peter's was built upon ancient roman catacombs, believe's to contain the bones of the saint peter along with other early christian Martyrs. In 1505, Bramante was commissioned to tear down the Romanesque basilica. His Renaissance style plan shows perfect symmetry. 1564 Michelangelo completed a new plan for the basilica.

    His design is more baroque, with a grander cupola, thicker walls/pillars, bit simpler and more open space so that you can see the "cathedra petri" or chair of Saint Peter throughout the space. Walls undulate and "breathe" and have deep space and pillars. Modern completed his additions in 161
