Carbon monoxide is what most likely affected cell differentiation in the growing embryo. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas and large amounts of it can be released from burning coal and by inhaling smokes from cigarettes. Babies take in oxygen through the placenta for their growth and development. When a pregnant woman inhales carbon monoxide and other harmful gases, these gases replace oxygen in the baby's bloodstream, reduces the amount of oxygen that is used by the baby. This affects cell differentiation in the growing baby, decelerates its growth and development, and increases the risk of miscarriage and respiratory diseases.
