What is meant by the term insulin resistance? Blood glucose is high, and the kidneys cannot reabsorb enough glucose, which can be detected in the urine. Cells have a decreased response to the normal level of circulating insulin. The pancreas synthesizes insulin normally, but does not release it appropriately. Cells in target tissues lose all ability to respond to insulin. The pancreas does not produce insulin, or it produces insufficient amounts.

Cells have a decreased response to the normal level of circulating insulin.

    Explanation:

By insulin resistance we mean to say that the cells do not respond to the normal level of insulin which is circulating in the blood. It happens because cells have a a very few insulin receptors on their surface because the pathway which synthesizes insulin receptor is malfunctioned. Such malfunctioned pathway leads to the lack of insulin receptor on cell surface as a result of which even though there is enough insulin the blood yet cells develop a resistance against insulin. Type 2 diabetes is characterized with insulin resistance.
