Why do some species employ both mitosis and meiosis, whereas other species use only mitosis?

    They need both mitosis and meiosis if they produce animal gametes. Mitosis is the division of a cell into two identical cells. Meiosis, on the other hand, is the production of sex cells or gametes (sperm and egg). Both processes are needed by animals to reproduce.
