In a population of turtles, the allele that causes a yellow shell (y) is dominant to the allele that results in a red shell (y). if the dominant allele is present in the population at the 0.72 level and the population is in hardy-weinberg equilibrium, what percentage of the population would be expected to have a red shell? express your answer to the nearest tenth of a percent.

    According to Hardy weinberg principle

    P²+2pq+q²=1

    where,

    p=Y (yellow shell)

    q=y (red shell)

    Given

    Y value = 0.72

    Required

    y=?

    Solution

    put value of Y in hardy weinberg equation

    (0.72) ² + 2q (0.72) + q² = 1

    0.51 + 1.44q = 1

    1.44q + q² = 1-0.51

    1.44q + q² = 0.48

    q² = 0.48 / 1.44q

    multiply and divide both side by q we will get

    q = 0.33

    Result

    Thus the value of y allele according to Hardy weinberg equation is 0.33
