The corpus luteum is a temporary structure formed by female mammals and it carries out endocrine functions. It secretes the hormone progesterone, whether the egg is fertilized or not. If fertilization has occurred, then the corpus luteum will not be broken down and will prevent the breakdown of uterine lining and stops the release of more egg cells, observed as the prevention of mensuration.
