    Located underneath it is the hypothalamus is placed in the medial temporal lobe of the brain. It is superior to the midbrain and inferior to the thalamus.

    The hypothalamus serves many survival functions in an organism. It is the area physiologically responsible for hunger, thirst and sex. It also plays a major role in growth and development as it influences the pituitary gland of the endocrine system which is also known as the master gland.
