Carbon disulfide burns in oxygen to yield carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide according to the chemical equation cs2 (ℓ) + 3 o2 (g) - → co2 (g) + 2 so2 (g). if 1.25 mol of cs2 is combined with 0.57 mol of o2, identify the limiting reactant.

    Explanation:

    cs2 (ℓ) + 3 o2 (g) - → co2 (g) + 2 so2 (g)

    from the balanced equation

    1 mole carbon disulfide requires 3 mole of oxygen

    1.25 moles of cs₂ will required 3.75 mole of oxygen

    while 0.57 mole of oxygen will require 0.19 mole of cs₂

    comparing, oxygen is the limiting reagent since 0.57 mole of oxygen will require just 0.19 mole out of 1.25 mole meaning cs₂ is in excess.
