During external respiration or gas exchange in the alveoli oxygen diffuses into red blood cells.

Explanation:

During gas exchange in the lungs oxygen binds to the iron heme on hemoglobin, each red blood cell contains millions of hemoglobin protein which can each carry 4 O2 atoms.

During gas exchange in the tissues (internal respiration) O2 flows into the cell while waste products such as CO2 flow into the blood to be exchanged at the alveoli and exhaled completely removing the CO2 from our bodys system!
