Why can't calcium hydroxide be written caoh2?

    I'm assuming you mean without parenthesis and that's because if there are no parenthesis, then it looks like there is one Calcium, one Oxygen, and two Hydrogen instead of one Calcium and two Hydroxide like Ca (OH) 2.
