Gatsby also almost knocked down the clock from nervousness, his appearance when he first arrived, and the awkward silence that ensued his entrance.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby tells the story of Jay Gatsby and his attempts at trying to reclaim his lost love Daisy. the lost American dream and the theme of wealth and belonging plays a huge role in this story.

    In chapter 5, just like Gatsby had requested Nick to do, Daisy had come over to her cousin's place. There, she met Gatsby, who she was in a relationship some 5 years back. This is the first time they have seen each other after Gatsby left for the war. And the four details that show the tense and nervous atmosphere of this scene in Nick's house are-

The awkward and silent atmosphere right after Gatsby entered. "A pause; it endured horribly". Daisy's seemingly uncomfortable appearance yet trying to seem alright. "Daisy was sitting frightened but graceful on the edge of a stiff chair". Gatsby almost knocked down the clock on the mantelpiece. "The clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers and set it back in place".
