She was ... well and hale as ere a woman ever were, except for that road.

    Option - C

    Explanation:

William Faulkner's AS I LAY DYING underlines the idea that death is a relief, a panache for the troubles, trials, and tribulations in the world.

Anse is the husband of Addie Bundren. With an attitude of complacency, he does not like to work. When he was young he fell sick. The reason was physical exposure to the sun. Since then he started finding one or the other excuse to not sweat i. e. not work.

He is portrayed as quite a mean character who is least perturbed even with the circumstance of the death of his wife and sees God's will in it.

In this statement, he is reflecting about the good health of his wife who though lay on the bed to rest as she was not keeping well. He thinks she died because of the road.

Through Anse, the author seems to be commenting upon the advent of modernity and also leads to doubts about the 'reality of sickness' of Addie. The reader does for a while pondering on the issue of whether the wife was really sick.
