I read the character list of the story. I found Marie, Raymond, and Salamano. There was no Robot woman mentioned.

Based on what I've read, Salamano is the likely character that has a similar behavior describe above.

He had a dog. He was vicious towards the dog. It would seem as though he was uncaring but when the dog got lost, Salamano was brokenhearted and grieved his loss.

In the above description, the character shows an indifferent facade but was in fact interested on his reading.
