After they beat him up and questioned why he was doing this, he told them his dream of treasure, they laughed and left him in his life thinking that he was stupid. He was also told that one of bandits also dreamed of a buried treasure under an old pear next to an abandoned church in Andalusia, but the bandit was not stupid to believe it and embark on a big trip to Spain. Then Santiago understood the words of the Alchemist, and realized that the treasure he sought around the world was, in fact, at all times where he was resting and napping while guarding sheep. So he went back and found what he was looking for.
