    The Lagoon tells the story from the narration of a Malayan guy, Arsart, who is telling it to his friend Tuan, a white European who is visiting Arsat's home, the lagoon. Arsat is dealing with his beloved illness who he met while he was a warrior with his brother. He is suffering because he knows he must forget her but it is pretty difficult for him, so he run away with her.

    Cynical is an adjective used to describe people who are just thinking in their own interesting, without caring about the others and just trying to achieve it despite what damage it can make. In the dialogue we can notice how "I can see nothing" aludes this adjective, he is only concerned about what HE can see.
