In Sophocles’ play Antigone, Oedipus steps down as King and gives his sons the kingdom. After both die in battle, Oedipus’ brother in law Creon takes the throne. Antigone was in love with Oedipus’ son Polynices, who is refused burial for being a traitor. Creon sentences Antigone to be thrown in a cave, to the disapproval of the gods. He changes his mind and allows Polynices’ burial, but Antigone commits suicide on the way. Creon’s son, Haemon, who is betrothed to Antigone, also commits suicide, prompting his mother to do the same. Creon goes mad with grief. Haemon’s argument with Creon is the latest event mentioned here.
