    The tragedy referred which befell Edgar Allan Poe’s mother was when she died of pulmonary tuberculosis. Edgar Allan Poe was 3 years old then. Edgar Allan Poe was a known American writer, editor, and literary critic. His specialization were on his poetry and short stories, and tales of mystery and the macabre. In 1810, their family was abandoned by his father. A year later, a tragic event happened for his mother died a year later from consumption pulmonary tuberculosis. Soon after, Poe was then taken into the home of John Allan. Allan was a successful Scottish merchant in Richmond, Virginia who traded variety of goods, including tobacco, cloth, wheat, tombstones, and slaves. Edgar Poe treated the Allans as his foster family who were also the ones who gave him the name "Edgar Allan Poe", though they never formally adopted him.
