O. Henry is comparing Jim and Della to A. the wise men who gave gifts to the infant Jesus.

He is comparing them to the Magi, who are exactly that. He isn't really comparing them to the angel, baby Jesus, or his parents, but rather to the people who presented Jesus will all the gifts, according to the story of The Gifts of the Magi.
