The gautrain really is very different from the metro trains.

Cost: A single ticket on the Gautrain is likely to cost around R150 whereas on the Metro train it would cost around R10 depending how far you are travelling.

Number of stations: The Gautrain is a specialised train route running through certain more affluent parts of the Johannesburg CBD and the airport, whereas the Metro services the Johannesburg CBD and outlying suburbs. While the number of stations on the Gautrain line is very limited, probably less than 10, the number of stations on a Metro train network can be in the hundreds.

The peak periods for the Gautrain and Metro are probably similar: the periods that most people leave and return for work, i. e. early morning and early evening.

The frequency of Gautrains on a particular line is fairly frequent and reliable: remember there are limited stations and the trains tend to be more advanced and well maintained. The Metro train frequencies can also be frequent, provided that the lines are well maintained and managed.
