A big storm was coming to the United States when Abraham Lincoln was elected. As soon as Lincoln was elected President of the United States, seven southern states seceded from the Union. Although the states affirmed that they had the right to separate from the Union, Lincoln did not agree because he considered that secession was against the law and this would generate division between American people. So he tried to do maintain the unity of the states.
