The Arabs were never really unified before Islam. But Islam taught them and unified them under one religion where they were all Muslims and that was what mattered to them. But after the death of prophet Muhammad they could not definitively answer the question on who should they follow and that split the religion into Shi'a and Sunni Islam that is still prevalent today.
