Back then, the north union actually was fighting just for the sake of fighting. So they really didn't have much motivation ... But when emancipation proclamation came. That all changed. They had a purpose to fight for, the political unity in the north had inspired more to fight harder, and more to join up. The south already had their motivation to fight harder, to keep the slaves that built their economy.
