For many years, the Appalachian Mountains acted as a deterrent on westward settlement. The British Proclamation of 1763, created after the 7-Year War (French & Indian War) actually forbade colonists from settling beyond the mountains, largely considered to be a gesture of peace towards the tribes that lived west of the mountains.

Colonists did end up ignoring this proclamation and by the time of the Revolution, colonists were beginning to freely move past the range.
