Each of these guard against tyranny because the separation of powers provides those all the important checks and balances in the machinery of government. They prevent the Head of State from simply ordering unjust calls - and the order being carried out. It prevents any one branch of government from amassing too much power and assuming the role of a dictator. In principle, it is supposed to encourage co-operation and consensus across a broad spectrum, but it can also lead to constitutional paralysis, for example, if a partisan legislature routinely blocks legislation.
