As Lord Protector of England, Oliver Cromwell enjoyed cordial relations with the Parliament. Oversaw the restoration of Charles II to the throne. Was less successful than his son, who succeeded him. Enjoyed the support of a large majority of the population. Required high taxes to quell numerous rebellions, including those in Ireland and Scotland.
