At its height, the Byzantine empire covered an area of 1.05 million km². It covered the Balkans, the Italian Peninsula, parts of Spain, parts of North Africa, Egypt, the Levant and Anatolia. However, its smallest size was 420,000 km² (the Balkans and areas of Anatolia) from about 1320 until the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
