to show greater tolerance toward pueblo religious traditions

The Pueblo Revolt occurred in 1680 because the Spanish attempted to stop the religious rituals of the Pueblo tribe.

The Pueblo were forced to convert to Catholicism under Spanish rule. Members of the tribe were baptized, married in Catholic tradition, and practice Catholic ritual. However, the Pueblo continued to practice their own rituals despite the harsh punishments by the Spanish. The Pueblo organized small rebellions against the Spanish but in 1680 almost all Pueblo came together to rebel against the Spanish. The Spanish were violently attacked and forced to leave the area. The revolt push the Spanish out of the area and allowed the Pueblo to live freely until 1692.
